<image:caption>Jones Bay Wharf, constructed between 1911 and 1919, was one of the first Pyrmont wharves built by the Sydney Harbour Trust. The wharf consists of two nearly 300 metre long, double-level shed buildings. In a collaborative design partnership, OCP Architects were part of the team that transformed Jones Bay Wharf into an exemplary example of adaptive reuse along Sydney Harbour. As a requirement of development approval, OCP Architects prepared and oversaw implementation a heritage conservation strategy for the wharf and buildings. Heritage action plans were developed as part of the strategy containing detailed methodologies for the removal and labelling of heritage fabric, the storage of salvaged fabric, the maximum retention of fabric as well as specific actions for its repair and conservation. Retaining the sense of the original expansive internal spaces was of high importance. Although internal spaces could not remain in their original configuration, by limiting subdivisions within tenancies, especially in the southern half of the site, and the inventive placement of mezzanine floors, which allowed large, open uninterrupted spaces, the sense of scale and space of the original form can still be appreciated. The design also allowed major structural elements such as steel columns, girders and roof trusses to remain visible. The adaptation for commercial office space also required larger glazed areas. To avoid dramatically altering the existing rhythmic chequerboard pattern of void (open cargo doors) and solid (weatherboard and metal cladding), external sliding louvres were introduced in the bays where cladding was removed. Ideally located on the edge of the harbour, making the most of Sydney’s outdoor climate, tenants and the general public can now enjoy the benefits afforded by the adaptive re-use of an large obsolete marine structure for commercial office and retail use has assured the survival of the Jones Bay Wharf complex. This work has assured the survival of the Jones Bay Wharf, a prominent yet previously underutilised item of Sydney’s heritage. The success of this project is reflected in it receiving the highest national heritage award, the RAIA NSW Chapter Greenway Award and Award for Heritage & Adaptive Reuse Development.</image:caption>

Built in 1887, the Baptist Church operated in the heart of Darlinghurst until 1996 when it was sold to City Council due to dwindling congregation numbers. Externally, the scope of the restoration work included tuck pointing the brick façade and conservation works to the slate roof, copper work and stained glass leadlight windows. Internally, the conservation works consisted of an exquisite curved timber panelled ceiling and lime plasterwork.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A church and adjoining church hall were adapted for use as two separate residences. External additions to the original envelopes have been designed as sleek modern pavilions with glazed links to the heritage buildings. Mezzanines appear to float within the spaces. They were introduced within the original volumes to increase the floor area while allowing the original roof structures to remain visible and retain the original spatial qualities. The living spaces are located on the upper levels with bedroom spaces on the ground floors, lit through an innovative combination of windows and glazed ceiling panels designed to ensure the stone walls of the church did not have to be altered.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rothwell House - Rothwell House</image:title>
<image:caption>‘Rothwell House’ is a c.1840s Georgian Regency mansion and one of Glebe’s old colonial houses. Following a period of neglect since World War II, including a major fire in the 1940s that devastated its warehouse, leaving it in ruins, the site was subsequently abandoned. The building was earmarked for demolition, when in the mid-1980s it was purchased by architect Otto Cserhalmi. Rothwell was gradually restored for use by his family including the warehouse, which was carefully converted to an office for his architectural practice. The work included reinstating the landscaped gardens and working with the local council to sympathetically landscape the adjacent public park. Rothwell House, including its warehouse and landscape setting, was been restored to its former grand state, with the house containing immaculate interiors that span the three remarkable levels. After its restoration, Rothwell has gained recognition and protection by receiving a state heritage listing from NSW Heritage Office.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Architecturally restored to its historical grandeur, 'Rothwell House' is a c1840s Georgian Regency mansion with immaculate interiors spanning three remarkable levels. After WW11 Rothwell was gradually neglected, a major fire devastated its warehouse leaving it in ruins during the 1940’s and for decades the site was totally abandoned. By the mid 1980’s the building was ear marked for demolition, when heritage architect Otto Cserhalmi brought it and has gradually restored Rothwell for his family, carefully converted its warehouse for his architectural office , re-instated its landscaped gardens and worked with the local Council to symbiotically landscape the adjacent park. After its restoration Rothwell has gained recognition by receiving a state heritage listing from NSW Heritage Office. </image:caption>

<image:caption>OCP Architects were engaged as the conservation architects for RailCorp to undertake a major program of sandstone conservation works for Sydney Central Station with the particular aim of preserving and enhancing the heritage significance of the building’s colonnade, bridge and retaining walls. OCP produced a detailed stone schedule for all 19 areas of the station in the form of a database as well as CAD drawings for both the overall areas and specific stonework details, in addition to overseeing works on site. The restoration works were designed to impact minimally on the existing railway station, light rail, bus services, pedestrian and parking operations of Sydney Central Station. Throughout the course of the works the Station shall remain fully operational. The conservation works were completed to ensure not only a long-standing, minimal maintenance outlook for half a century, but also to restore and commemorate one of Sydney’s greatest historical landmarks. Other works undertaken by OCP Architects at Central Station include complete review of access provisions (including lifts, escalators, paving, crowd control, access streets, ramps and bridges), graphic design of construction hoarding during restoration works, as well as the concept design of the Devonshire entry (including escalators, lifts and access stairs).</image:caption>

<image:title>Building Maintenance + Fabric Studies - Glebe Housing Fabric Survey</image:title>
<image:caption>OCP Architects as architects and heritage consultants have had considerable experience in the conservation of the Glebe Estate over several decades since the 1970s and in recent years provided professional guidance on the essential roof repair program in Glebe. The heritage fabric assessment of each house undertaken in 2015 assessed, from street level, the condition of front facades and fencing of the 600+ heritage buildings within the Bishopthorp, St Phillips and Lyndhurst areas of Glebe. An individual schedule was prepared for each building, which was supported by photographic documentation. The assessment’s prime aim was to identify elements that posed a potential safety threat to residents and the public. The work scheduled the range of building elements from roof to ground level and the condition of each element was ranked to assist in determining appropriate priorities for works. OCP Architects provided recommendations based on the condition of each house. Any houses containing poor to dangerous conditions were then prioritised within the maintenance program for maintenance work, which is ongoing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Building Maintenance + Fabric Studies - Station Hazmat Analysis</image:title>
<image:caption>This project involved detailed assessment of building fabric of 101 train stations throughout New South Wales in 2014, as well as an additional 27 station in 2017. Site inspections required building fabric analysis of both heritage listed and non–heritage listed stations and the identification of hazardous materials at each station and its physical condition. OCP provided recommendations for short term and long term remediation of problem areas. A heritage impact statement was prepared for each station, which included analysis of hazardous material and provided recommendations for the future maintenance and conservation of the buildings. An archival recording was also formed for certain stations where removal of heritage fabric was deemed necessary. The identification and status of the existing hazardous materials required assessment of the physical fabric to determine what scope of works were necessary and determined whether these works would affect the heritage significance of the relevant stations. Based on the buildings and their heritage status, recommendations were provided to ensure that significant heritage fabric was sensitively managed during the refurbishment works.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The ongoing Station Refresh program has seen the transformation of many train stations across NSW. The intent of the program is to refresh and revitalize train stations in order to improve customer environments by providing cleaner, safer and more functional facilities. The Refresh program involved a range of essential maintenance, repair, cleaning and re-painting works. OCP Architects have so far provided advice on 16 Stations. The project involved the detailed assessment of building fabric which required strong Architectural and Heritage expertise. As part of these works, OCP Architects prepared Schedule of Works and Specifications in order to provide an element-by-element conservation methodology, as well as Statement of Heritage Impact reports to support the approval of the proposed works at each station. In addition, advice was provided through numerous hold points during construction in order to ensure built quality.</image:caption>

<image:title>Building Maintenance + Fabric Studies - Sydney University Heritage Fabric Study</image:title>
<image:caption>This project required detailed assessment of building fabric utilising heritage and architectural expertise to provide a detailed costed forward maintenance plan for all the University’s built heritage assets. Aspects of ongoing maintenance were identified for 5, 10 and 25 year periods. The HFS has been successful in predicting an allowance for ongoing maintenance works on an annual basis and with regard to priority works, including safety. OCP Architects have been engaged in over twenty projects in the last decade at Sydney University, providing advice on sensitive heritage issues and documenting repair works, in addition to coordinating the input of specialist sub – consultants and contractors. Efficient management and effective liaison with the University for their large scale projects ensured that work was carried out on time and budget. Projects include: Sydney University Main Quadrangle Conservation Works; Anderson Stuart Make Safe and Conservation Works; Administration building roof; equitable access study; Clocktower maintenance and conservation works; five and ten year maintenance plans for Madsen Roof; the complete scheduling of conservation works for McLaurin Hall; documentation advice for repairs to the JD Stewart building and Chipping Norton building and investigation and analysis of condition and defects of the Great Hall building.</image:caption>

<image:caption>4 Goulburn Street, Sydney Sydney Trades Hall is a physical reminder of the history and tradition of the Trade Union movement in New South Wales and provides evidence of the social and socio-economic history of the city. Initially, OCP Architects prepared a Conservation Management Plan (CMP), which included detailed documentary research and archival recording of the building, its uses and its history. This CMP was subsequently endorsed by the then NSW Heritage Office. The scope of works was then increased to include conservation and upgrading works to the building, including installation of fire and access systems, air-conditioning, upgrading of electrical/data and communication systems and a new lift. Executed in conjunction with conservation works to the facade and management of the extensive moveable heritage collection included within the building, upgrading and adopting the Sydney Trades Hall to a usable, modern office building was a substantial undertaking. At the completion of the project, Sydney Trades Hall was conserved and adaptively reused, providing an excellent example of modern reinvention. The building has a new ‘heart’ internally which lets in an abundance of natural light and the building’s main heritage features and moveable heritage items contribute to the overall interpretation of the building. It has been fully conserved both internally and externally and many original features have been reinstated by skilled crafts people.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dame Eadith Estate - Dame Eadith Walker Estate</image:title>
<image:caption>The Stables Building is a very significant 1895 building designed by John Sulman. It is influenced by English rural architecture and is located in the landscaped grounds of the Dame Eadith Walker Estate, also known as ‘Yaralla.’ The condition of the building had deteriorated considerably with extensive termite damage to much of the fabric and structure. OCP Architects were engaged to investigate and document all required conservation and remedial repairs works as well as coordinate the structural, electrical and hydraulic engineering consultants. The works also involved the refurbishment of the two residential flats it a more sympathetic design of the interior.</image:caption>

<image:title>Devonshire Entry Central Station - Devonshire Entry Central Station</image:title>
<image:caption>Central Railway Station is an iconic heritage listed landmark and as such prompted Rail Corp to engage OCP Architects for the Devonshire Street entry re-design, providing easy access within a new entry building, while remaining sympathetic to this heritage significant site and precinct. Adjoining the entrance to the south is the heritage listed former Railway Institute Building and to the north an open plaza containing a dozen statues as a tribute to important historical figures. In terms of location and civic design, the Devonshire Street entry pavilion building reflects the classic elegance and scale of the quadrant shaped stone entry building beyond the plaza, on the corner of Eddy Avenue. The design ethos has provided an entry pavilion-style building supported on 4 columns to minimize structure and to straddle the railway tunnels beneath. The strong horizontal roof form with large splayed soffits and fine edged overhangs provides a transparent contemporary building entrance of classic proportions befitting its location and function. At its base, low sandstone walls reflect an essential quality of the main station building as well as the adjoining heritage precinct.</image:caption>
